It's an interesting read, but it lacks depth. The Supernatural Companion for S2 is the first one I've bought, but seeing that the author is the same for all three books published so far, I doubt there's much difference. The depth and attention to detail that Topping shows are unparalleled. I guess I'm just a bit spoiled when it comes to tv show guides, but the first one I ever read, was Keith Topping's Angel unofficial guide, "Hollywood Vampire", followed by his Buffy one - "Slayer". ![]() ![]() ![]() I can’t tell whether I’m sort of charmed by this sort of British world or unnerved by it. Yes, all that stuff (minus maybe the empire) still exists, but I never seem to come across books about those things. ![]() Most of the stories seem to be in that odd space of Englishness where there are still empires and vicars and sooty London lanes and rattling old cars along idyllic country lanes. It’s still that very specific English style. And now I had a whole other Joan Aiken book to read. ![]() The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is of a very specific English style. But it turns out I have read Joan Aiken I’ve read The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and was not particularly enthused about the whole thing. Full disclosure: I’m pretty sure I requested this book to review because I thought it was written by Jenny Jaeckel, which is sort of similar sounding to Joan Aiken, but not really. ![]() ![]() ![]() The book recognizes that “There are many words in English that you don’t need at all,” and that “There are other words you need simply to understand when you read or hear them.” It then tells the student: “There are words that you need to be able to use yourself,” which, yes, the book focuses on. Hence, the first section of the book is aptly named: “strategies for learning vocabulary.” This part immediately caught my attention, as it was rather unusual for a vocabulary book to specifically instruct a student how to study. The book is organized in a logical order to help students achieve fluency in colloquial English lexicon. ![]() Vocabulary in Use, published by Cambridge University Press, attempts to bypass that problem by directly targeting learners who wish to learn words that enter the everyday language of English speakers. Although there are tons of English vocabulary books on the market, a problem that many students learning English as a second language face is that practicality is compromised by advanced words. ![]() ![]() ![]() Her first job was as a librarian in Yakima, Washington, where she met many children who were searching for the same books that she had always hoped to find as a child herself. She moved to California to attend the University of California, Berkeley, and after graduation with a B.A in English in 1938, studied at the School of Librarianship at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she earned a degree in librarianship in 1939. Thereafter, she was a frequent visitor to the library, though she rarely found the books she most wanted to read - those about children like herself. It wasn't until she was in third grade that she found enjoyment from books, when she started reading The Dutch Twins by Lucy Fitch Perkins. She was slow in learning to read, due partly to her dissatisfaction with the books she was required to read and partly to an unpleasant first grade teacher. BECAUSE HE IS AN ARROGANT AND MANIPULATING STALKER. Perhaps there is a reason that the second Bridgerton son, Benedict, is mostly absent or just lingering around in the background in the first two books. It definitely struck a different cord with me than it did with a lot of other Cannonballers. This review is going to be 250+ words full of WTF.
